Seth wheeled into the parking lot across the street from Gordon’s law firm. Surprisingly, the lights were on, the front door was open, and the secretary was at her desk, furiously typing. The fact that the senior partner was stone cold dead didn’t seem to have stopped the activity in the place.

Charlotte didn’t know what she had expected, but she was sure she hadn’t been prepared for anything as lively as this. Once the police surrendered the crime scene back to the firm, business apparently re-started as usual, as if Gordon Carstairs, the most veteran lawyer in all of Ivy Grove, had never existed at all.

Seth opened the glass door, and the secretary looked up from behind her small desk, smiled, and said as if from memory, “Hi, how may I help you today? Is it criminal, corporate, or civil?” The woman wore a smart two-piece knit, sage green, which hugged her generous curves. Charlotte couldn’t help but think she was definitely Gordon’s type, if you went by his past dalliances.

“Oh, no, ma’am, nothing like that. I’m Detective Seth Landry, and this is my colleague, Charlotte Arnette. We were hoping to ask you a few questions concerning your former boss, Gordon Carstairs.”

The secretary looked surprised, but not for long, “Oh, sure, come right in. The boardroom is free. We can talk privately in there. Follow me.”

The secretary led the couple down a shiny marble floor hall to a well-appointed frosted glassed-in room, which held an elongated solid burled walnut conference table and eight leather executive chairs. The secretary sat at one end, offering chairs on either side of her seat. It was probably the only time the woman got to sit at the head of the table.

Seth brought out his notebook and pen and said, “First off, may we have your name and how long you’ve worked for Mr. Carstairs?”

“Oh, gosh, yes, where are my manners? I should have greeted you with a proper introduction. My name is Deidra Marks, and I’ve been the executive secretary-slash-paralegal for Gordon Carstairs for over a year now. I probably run this office better than Gordon does.”

Deidra laughed, as if she had forgotten her boss was dead, Charlotte thought. For a moment, anyway, because she suddenly sat erect with her hands in her lap, shifting her gaze from one sleuth to the other, waiting for the next question.

“Now, Ms. Marks, can you tell me if Gordon’s wife signed in on your visitor log the day he died?”

Deidra confidently shook her head and said, “No, never.”

“You mean she never signed in when came to see Gordon?”

“No, I mean she never came into the office, period, not once since I’ve been here and they’ve been married, but…”

“But what, Ms. Marks?”

“Well, on that day, you know, the final day, I did buzz Margaret Kim into Gordon’s office about thirty minutes before I buzzed in Davin Parker. Davin was the last person I handled.”

“Margaret Kim and Davin Parker?” Seth asked alertly.

“Yes. I left the office as soon as Davin arrived, as I knew Gordon could handle the last client of the day.
